Perth Mint: 125 years of government-backed precious metals from Western Australia

The Perth Mint predates the country it represents. Established on 20 June 1899 as the third colonial branch of Britain's Royal Mint, it was created to serve the gold rush that had transformed Western Australia into one of the world's most productive mining regions. Between 1899 and 1931 it struck over 106 million gold sovereigns for circulation across the British Empire. When Britain abandoned the gold standard in 1931, the mint shifted to refining. In 1970, ownership transferred to the Government of Western Australia — the arrangement that gives every Perth Mint product its sovereign guarantee today.

Fewer than 80 refineries worldwide hold LBMA Good Delivery accreditation. The Perth Mint is one of them — alongside accreditation from the Shanghai Gold Exchange, making it one of a small number of refineries recognised by both London and Shanghai simultaneously. For investors, this means Perth Mint products are accepted without additional verification on the world's two most significant bullion markets.

The annual wildlife series: Kangaroo, Emu, Kookaburra, Koala

Perth Mint's wildlife series are the backbone of their bullion programme — four distinct annual releases, each striking a new reverse design every year.

The Australian Kangaroo is the most liquid of the four — struck in .9999 fine silver and gold since 1987 with consistent global dealer recognition. The 2026 edition carries a 40th anniversary privy mark. The Australian Emu offers a more limited release at 30,000 pieces, with the 2026 reverse depicting the bird mid-stride across open farmland. The Australian Kookaburra has run continuously since 1990, making it one of the longest-running annual silver series in existence — earlier editions are increasingly sought by series collectors. The Australian Koala rounds out the wildlife quartet in both silver and gold, with a new eucalyptus scene each year.

All four carry AUD face value backed by the Australian government and .9999 fine silver purity. All four change design annually — last year's release will not return.

Licensed releases: TMNT and Dune

Perth Mint's licensed coin programme extends the catalogue into popular culture. The 40th Anniversary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coin and the Dune coloured coin represent the mint's capacity to combine investment-grade silver with franchise licences that attract collectors beyond the traditional precious metals market. Both carry the same .999 fine silver standard and Perth Mint quality guarantee as the wildlife series.
